Reel

macOS · Windows · free and open source

Plays everything.
Built from scratch.

Reel opens nearly every film, show and song you have, from 4K HEVC to DTS-HD Master Audio, and adds a library, find in dialogue and lossless clip export. Every container and every decoder is written from scratch in Tessel, with no FFmpeg inside.

Picks up where you left off

The home screen shows what you were watching, how much is left, and the next episode of each show. Reel remembers every file's position, audio and subtitle tracks, volume, speed, delays, picture settings and equalizer.

  • Start over or continue, your choice each time
  • The next episode starts on its own at the end of this one
  • Recently added files from your library folders

Your library, sorted for you

Point Reel at your folders. Films go under Movies, episodes under their show and season with watched marks and progress, and music under artist and album. History and playlists sit alongside.

  • M3U, PLS, XSPF, WPL and CUE playlists
  • Search, sort, grid or list, mark watched or unwatched

Find any line of dialogue

Search every subtitle track for a word, see each match with the lines around it, and jump straight there. Or open the transcript, which follows along as the film plays.

  • SRT, ASS/SSA, WebVTT, MP4 text, Blu-ray PGS and DVD subtitles
  • A second subtitle track at the top, in a style you choose
  • Text encoding detected, Chinese, Japanese and Korean included
  • Search and download from OpenSubtitles

Sound and picture, your way

A 10-band equalizer with presets, loudness normalisation for quiet dialogue and loud explosions, a compressor and limiter, and headphone crossfeed. For the picture: brightness, contrast, colour, crop, aspect ratio, zoom, rotation, sharpening and denoising.

  • Black bars detected and cropped
  • Interlaced TV and DVDs deinterlaced automatically
  • Audio and subtitle delay, speed from 0.25× to 4× with the pitch kept

Cut a clip without losing quality

Pick a start and an end, and Reel writes that part to MKV or MP4 without re-encoding, in seconds. Or make a GIF of it.

  • Choose which audio and subtitle tracks go in
  • Start on the exact frame, or at the keyframe before
Export Clip: start and end times, tracks, MKV or MP4, and the output file
